How to perform a firmware update with the embedded EFI Shell?

Many modern PCs (like XS35V4 and XS36V4) use a pure UEFI firmware instead of a traditional BIOS for hardware initialising.
Note: The terms UEFI firmware and BIOS are still used synonymously.

  1. Please download the latest firmware and copy the unpacked files to a USB stick with FAT(32) file system.
  2. Plug in your USB device, power on your PC and press the F7 key until the screen Please select boot device appears.
Select UEFI: Built-in EFI Shell and press the Enter key.
The system will now boot the embedded EFI Shell and prompt the Device Mapping Table.

  3. In order to access the USB device, identify the correct ID for the Removable Hard Disk from the Device Mapping Table.
Please then type fs2: and hit Enter afterwards.
If required, please change directories where the firmware update files are saved. The command to type is cd xs36.
The files in the current folder can be listed using the dir command.
Finally run the batch file flash64.nsh.
Next, the firmware update process starts automatically and restarts the system afterwards.

Notice: After performing a firmware update, please always ensure to have the operating system in use also selected in the firmware setup.
To do so, please press the "Del" key while booting to enter the boot menu. Then navigate to "OS Selection".
In case of a wrong setting here, not only the boot process of the existing Windows installation will fail, also changes on the specific drive may occur making booting impossible.

Learn more about using high-performance graphics cards with SG41J1 Plus V2

Supports dual-slot graphics cards
The Shuttle XPC Barebone SG41J1 series supports large dual-slot graphics cards which occupies two slots. Please note, that in this case the second slot for another expansion cards cannot be used.

Maximum dimensions for graphics cards: 273 x 98 x 38mm
Despite the small cube format, XPCs still supports very large graphics cards. Please note, that graphics cards with the same model number may differ in size.

Is the 250W power supply sufficient?
Manufacturers of graphics cards state for their devices what minimum power output a PC's power supply must be able to deliver to ensure stable operation, for example 250W for ATI's Radeon HD5770. Shuttle's SG41J1 series however, equipped with a 300W power supply, still meets the requirements of the graphics cards listed in the Shuttle compatibility list, because the barebone's power supply is especially designed for such a small system which won't allow for installing as many expansion cards and hard drives as a big tower PC.

Compatibility list
Please find compatible components like processors and graphics cards on the support list at global.shuttle.com. Please note that only a limited choice of components available on the market can be tested. Naturally, the list is kept up to date and extended constantly when new components become available.

Power supply upgrade
The Shuttle XPC series SG41J1 already supports several powerful dual-slot graphics cards out of the box. However, it does not provide additional power connectors for graphics cards (6-pin or 8-pin). A power supply upgrade is required for certain graphics cards as shown in the table.

fold faq

Why my SH55J2 has no display by onboard graphics?

Can I change The Default 667MHz Memory Frequency on SD30G2+ To The 800MHz Range when using 800MHz RAM?

When tested with the SD30S1A7.BIN BIOS, the system will auto-detect, compatible, 800MHz memory at a frequency of 667MHz even after Loading Optimized Defaults in the BIOS. This is normal as this system is optimized to work with 667MHz RAM. Though the system is designed to use 667MHz memory, it is possible to use 800MHz memory though it will be under-clocked to 667MHz.

With certain RAM, it is possible to over-clock the memory to the 800MHz range.

Please keep in mind that this is possible with certain memory. Some memory brands may not be compatible with this system and you will not be able to overclock them to the 800MHz range.

To find out if your system is able to achieve this with your, particular, memory please go into the Frequency/Voltage Control section of the BIOS, locate DRAM Timing Selectable; change it from “By SPE,” to “Manual.” In the same section, navigate to “System Memory Frequency,” and change the setting to 800MHz or 834MHz, depending on what is available in the setting. Press F10 to Save and Quit the BIOS. The system will reboot and should reflect the change in memory frequency as modified above.

What is the maximum RAM supported by the SP35P2 Pro & V2?

The SP35P2 Pro and V2 Barebones use the P35 Express Chipset. The Intel P35 Express Chipset supports the new dual-channel DDR3 memory technology while also maintaining support for DDR2 memory which is the type of memory implemented in the SP35P2 Series of barebones.

The Intel P35 Express Chipset operates at a lower memory voltage, resulting in approximately 20% lower power consumption and reduced heat dissipation, but delivers higher bandwidth, faster system performance, and higher performance per watt than its predecessors.

As implemented in the SP35P2 Pro and V2 Barebones, these barebones can use up to 8GB of memory on their motherboards. Please note, however, that to fully utilize the 8GB of RAM, a 64 bit operating system is recommended.

Why is there no sound from the SN78SH7 HDMI port?

The High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is a compact audio/video connector interface for transmitting uncompressed digital streams.

HDMI supports, on a single cable, any TV or PC video format including standard, enhanced, and high-definition video along with up to 8 channels of digital audio.

So, if HDMI is able to transmit, both, video and audio simultaneously, then why can’t we hear audio from the SN78SH7’s HDMI port?
The reason has to do with the nVidia Chipset driver. There appears to be a bug in the driver which prevents audio through the HDMI port from being, correctly, decoded and delivered through the port.

Though we cannot hear audio from the HDMI port, crystal clear video, does, come through the HDMI, just fine. While an updated driver is released to fix the HDMI audio issue, please use the onboard analog audio jacks in the back of the system for your audio needs.

X50 Touch Screen Calibration Procedure.

X50 Touch Screen Calibration Procedure
(USB Keyboard Needed For This)

You have just purchased a brand new X50 Touch Screen Computer.  You’ve just finished installing Windows XP, yet, when you try to use the touch screen functionality, the mouse pointer position does not seem to match the physical location of your stylus.

What could be occuring is that the touch screen has not been calibrated for whatever reason.

The first thing that must be done is to install the Touch Panel Driver  which is located on the X50’s support list page, at the Shuttle Global Site.  Once that driver has been installed, there’ll be a program entry in Start Menu, Programs, called eGalax Touch as shown in attachment.

Within the eGalax Touch entry in Programs, there is a program called Configure Utility.  When we click on that program, this will bring up the eGalaxy Touch: USB Controller Dialog Box as is demonstrated in attachment.

Within that dialog, you’ll find a Tools Tab.  If we click on that, we’ll find a few calibration options available for us.  For this FAQ, we are going to concentrate on the 4 Points Calibration Button.

To calibrate our X50, touch screen, we need to press the 4 Points Calibration button.  Once that occurs, we shall be presented with the following screens which will then walk us step by step through the calibration procedure.

Basically, the calibration utility will prompt you to apply pressure on the areas highlighted in color for a few seconds as it calibrates that area of the touch screen. Once the calibration is finished on that area, a red circle with a crosshair will appear until you stop touching the screen.  At that point, the calibration mark will move to another corner of the screen after which the process will begin again.  This will happen for all corners of the screen until the calibration process has finished.

Once calibration has been completed for each individual points, on the LCD, an image similar to the following is in attachement.

This basically means that each point has been calibrated and the application is ready to move on to the next point that needs to be calibrated.Once all points have been calibrated, you will receive the following dialog box indiating that the process is done.

At this point, the X50’s touch screen has been calibrated for you and is ready for everyday use.

Please see attachment for full explanation.

Is The PC62 PSU Compatible With The Shuttle K and D series?

The PC62 PSU is not compatible with the D and K series. When installed in the Shuttle, it will be a tight fit, however, the ATX 20/24 pin connector will be under the PC62 PSU due to thelength of the PSU. This will reduce the clearance needed for the PSU cables to easily attach the 20/24 pin connector onto the motherboard.

In addition to that, the length of the PC62 is such that it gets, dangerously, close to the RAM DIMM slots. This proximity will, eventually, lead to heat damage on the RAM modules due to the temperatures coming from the PSU. As such, it is not recommended to use this PSU on the Shuttle computer.

Avoiding CMOS Setting Utility password requests after a BIOS update

When updating from any BIOS version older than fn85s015.bin, CMOS Setting Utility will request you to enter a password

When updating from any BIOS version older than fn85s015.bin, CMOS Setting Utility will request you to enter a password. To avoid this request, you have two options. Prior to flashing, check the Clear CMOS tab in the WinFlash utility. Or. After flashing, clear CMOS with a jumper (remember to power down and disconnect the power cord).

Note: If you use Award flash utility and update BIOS in DOS-Mode, please type the command: awdflash.exe fn85sxxx.bin /cc (where fn85sxxx.bin is the current BIOS version you have)
