Create a bootable Windows 7 USB flash drive and integrate the USB 3.0 Drivers


Platforms with Intel Braswell-SoC or Series-100 chipsets are missing the EHCI-mode (USB 2.0). These systems are working in modern XHCI-mode (USB 3.0), only. Unfortunately Windows does not support XHCI out of the box. This leads to missing keyboard/mouse function during installation. The following FAQ will guide you to integrate the correct driver to your Windows 7 installation.


First you need the following files:

  1. Windows 7/8.1/10 PC with 10Gb or more free space
  2. USB flash drive with 8GB or more free space
  3. RUFUS (Tool for extracting the ISO-File to an USB-Stick)
  4. Windows 7 ISO-File
  5. Shuttle Windows 7 USB-Patcher
  6. DVD to ISO program

Start the DVD to ISO program, select your DVD and select the location where you want to save the ISO file

Insert the USB flash drive into the computer and start the downloaded RUFUS-Tool

  1. Check if the selected USB flash drive is the right one.
  2. Select the right Windows 7 ISO-File.
  3. Click Start and wait until the process is complete.

Start the Shuttle USB-Patcher and press Next

Close all instances of the Windows explorer and click Next

Click the update button, choose the USB which you have created before and press Next

The last step is starting the process by clicking the Start Button. The following process will take a long time, please be patient! After the process is finished, check if the Installation was successful and close the program

Try to install Windows 7 again.

OMNINAS Firmware update via USB


Note: This instruction is intended for advanced users.

1. Download the following file suitable for your Shuttle OMNINAS:

KD20.zip

2. Unzip the ZIP file downloaded onto a FAT32 formatted, empty USB 2.0 stick (sticks with USB 3.0 interface are not suitable for this process).

3. Remove the LAN cable and the hard disk(s) from your NAS. To reinsert correctly, note the order of hard disk 1 and 2.

4. Insert the USB stick into the front USB port on the NAS and start the unit.

5. The LEDs on the NAS will illuminate red and flash during the process, which takes a few minutes. The unit will switch off automatically later.

6. Remove the USB stick and reinsert the hard disks into the unit in the correct order.

7. The update is completed by starting the NAS by pressing the power button.

How to install Windows 7 on XS35V4 and XS36V4?


The Shuttle Slim-PC Barebones XS35V4 and XS36V4 support Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 operating systems.
Due to the UEFI firmware, only the 64-bit versions are supported
and the operating system to install must be set in the firmware setup (default setting = Windows 8) first.
Note: The terms UEFI firmware and BIOS are used synonymously.
Please perform the following steps before installing the Windows 7 operating system:

  1. Please go to the download section on the Shuttle website and check for the latest firmware version:

  2. Turn on your computer and press the Delete key while booting.
    The embedded Aptio Setup Utility (formerly: "BIOS Setup") appears and shows the current firmware version on its start page.
    Windows 7 64 bit is supported since firmware version 1.10.
    If you have an older firmware, then please first proceed to perform a firmware update to the latest version, before you go on with step 3.
    How to perform a firmware update with the embedded EFI Shell?
  3. Please use the Right Arrow key to switch to the Security page.
    Change the Secure Boot option to Disabled.
  4. Please use the Right Arrow key to switch to the Boot page.
    Change the OS Selection option to Windows 7, if you want to use Windows 7 as your operation system.
  5. Save changes and exit by pressing the F4 key and Enter key.
    Before you exit, please make sure to connect an external DVD drive to the USB port and insert a bootable Windows 7 installation disk.
  6. Please press the F7 key during the reboot process to enter the boot menu.
    Select the drive with the Windows 7 64 bit Installation DVD and press the Enter key.
  7. When the message "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD..." appears, then please press any key to proceed.
  8. Continue to finish the Windows 7 installation.

How to perform a firmware update with the embedded EFI Shell?


Many modern PCs (like XS35V4 and XS36V4) use a pure UEFI firmware instead of a traditional BIOS for hardware initialising.
Note: The terms UEFI firmware and BIOS are still used synonymously.

  1. Please download the latest firmware and copy the unpacked files to a USB stick with FAT(32) file system.
  2. Plug in your USB device, power on your PC and press the F7 key until the screen Please select boot device appears.
    Select UEFI: Built-in EFI Shell and press the Enter key.
    The system will now boot the embedded EFI Shell and prompt the Device Mapping Table.


  3. In order to access the USB device, identify the correct ID for the Removable Hard Disk from the Device Mapping Table.
    Please then type fs2: and hit Enter afterwards.
    If required, please change directories where the firmware update files are saved.The command to type is cd xs36.
    The files in the current folder can be listed using the dir command.
    Finally run the batch file flash64.nsh.
    Next, the firmware update process starts automatically and restarts the system afterwards.

Notice: After performing a firmware update, please always ensure to have the operating system in use also selected in the firmware setup.
To do so, please press the "Del" key while booting to enter the boot menu. Then navigate to "OS Selection".
In case of a wrong setting here, not only the boot process of the existing Windows installation will fail, also changes on the specific drive may occur making booting impossible.

(1) Please note, that certain LGA1155 processors do not include integrated graphics e.g. Core i5-2380P/2450P,2550K/3350P - in this case you must use a discrete PCIe graphics card.
(2) The integrated screen resolution is limited to 1366x768 and cannot support Full HD. However, the alternate VGA (and HDMI) port can support 1920x1080 resolution for Full HD video (1080p).
(3) A dedicated video driver is not available. The standard video driver supports up to 1280x1024 resolution through the VGA/HDMI port (1024x768 for XP). Full HD (1080p) is not supported. For X50V3/L: The integrated screen resolution is limited to 1366x768.
(4) Please disable the graphical user interface "Windows Aero" to play Full HD videos smoothly.
(5) The video player software needs to support "AMD App Acceleration" in order to play Full HD videos smoothly. Pls. find AMD App Acceleration Downloads here: support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/eyespeed_downloads.aspx
(6) SX79R5 has no integrated graphics, it can only use a discrete graphics card. All discrete graphics cards have no driver issue and can support Full HD video (1080p).

Can I move the hard disks from one KD20 to another KD20?

This question might be relevant in the following situations:
- KD20 has been replaced (e.g. due to hardware defect)
- After the reset of KD20 to factory default settings

The setting data for the RAID configuration is stored in the hard disks, so its possible to move the hard disks from one KD20 to another KD20. Please do not perform the configuration process on the new KD20 with the old hard disks, since all data would be lost during the formatting process. Please follow the steps below:

  1. The KD20 system is switched off.
  2. Put the old disks with the important data aside for later use. Install any hard disk with unimportant data into the HDD-1 bay in order to prepare the configuration of the system.
  3. Switch on KD20. Please proceed the steps for a Single-Disk configuration until you can access the hard disk. The old data of this hard disk will be lost.
  4. Switch off KD20 and replace the hard disk with your old hard disk, which contain the important data.
  5. Switch on KD20. The original status should be recovered now. This includes the RAID mode, user configuration, shared folders and data.


Caution:
Shuttle makes no warranty regarding the contens of this text and shall not be liable for any consequential damages, loss of data or loss of profit resulting from the use of KD20. Even the RAID 1 configuration (Data mirroring to a second hard disk) does not mean an absolut safety against data loss, which may occur through accidental misuse, malicious software or faulty hardware. We stongly recommend to backup all important data on a regular basis and you should place this data storage to a different location.

Is the XS35V3, XS36V and X50V3 graphics function compatible with Linux?


Shuttle products XS35V3 and XS36V (slim PCs) and X50V3 (all-in-one PC) use the Intel Atom D2700 processor (codename: "Cedar View") with integrated Intel GMA 3650 graphics function. Intel has no special Linux graphics driver for this processor.

However, the above models can be operated under Linux if the capabilities of the existing standard graphics card driver are sufficient for the application, e.g. for server and control applications as well as for simple, strictly limited Office applications. Although the standard graphics card driver offers no hardware acceleration for 2D and 3D display or video playback. We should like to point out that without the above-mentioned acceleration functions, user convenience is very limited. The use of textbased interfaces (e.g. at console level) is recommended.


How do I install the graphics function of XS35GTA V2, XS35GS V2 and XS35GTA V3 under Linux?

These Shuttle slim PCs use a mobile AMD/ATI HD 5430 or HD 7410M graphics card. Graphics drivers are now included in the scope of supply of the various current Linux distributions.

The following configuration, for example, has passed the test:
Operating system: Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit
Additional Ubuntu standard graphics driver: fglrx 2:8.960-0
Video player: VLC player with GPU acceleration deactivated

Does my Shuttle product support Ivy Bridge processors?

Most Shuttle PC products with LGA1155 socket are prepared to support the 3rd generation Intel Core processors with 22nm technology, also called "Ivy Bridge", which Intel released in May 2012. However, some steps need to be done before the PC can boot with this kind of processors.

  1. Check the below compatibility list, if your Shuttle XPC is prepared to support Ivy Bridge processors.
  2. Enter the BIOS setup program to check the current BIOS version.
  3. If BIOS need to be updated, then please download the latest BIOS and graphics driver from http://global.shuttle.com/download/download
    The BIOS Update need to be done with a compatible 2nd Generation Intel Core Processor (32nm technology, LGA1155 socket, called "Sandy Bridge").

How to find out the current BIOS version? How to distinguish V1 from V2 version on the

Start the PC and press the [DEL] or [F2] key to enter the BIOS setup program. The BIOS version is shown in the second line on the main screen. Please open the XPC chassis cover: unscrew 3 thumbscrews and slide the cover backwards and upwards. The version ID is located on the mainboard as shown in the photo:

In Dual-Channel mode, the memory modules can transmit and receive data with two data bus lines simultaneously. Enabling Dual-Channel mode can enhance the system performance.

How to enable WLAN on XS35 series

1. Please install all drivers and applications from driver CD.

2. You'll find a "ControlAP" icon on your desktop. Please start the "ControlAP" program.

3. Press the "Wireless" button to enable/disable the Wireless LAN function.

Which type of SATA connectors does XS35/XS35GT have?

The XS35(GT) uses the usual standards for the SATA connectors. You can install the following drives:
- one 2.5" (63.6mm) notebook hard disk drive (HDD) with Standard SATA connector
- one slim optical drive with 12.7mm height and Slimline SATA connector

What is the maximum size of VGA card that fits into my XPC?

There are 4 different XPC product series: G, P/P2, H and J series.


J series: The maximum size of card that fits into J series is 273 mm (L) x 98 mm (H) x 38 mm (D). But due to the different layout design on each model and VGA card, we strongly suggest to check our VGA support list for each model or test before purchasing the VGA card.




H series: The maximum size of card that fits into H series is 267 mm (L) x 98 mm (H) x 18/34 mm (D).




G series: The maximum size of card that fits into G series is 206 mm (L) x 98 mm (H) x 16 mm (D). But due to the different layout design on each model and VGA card, we strongly suggest to check our VGA support list for each model or test before purchasing the VGA card.




P/P2 series: The maximum size of card that fits into P/P2 series is 266 mm (L) x 98 mm (H) x 36 mm (D). But due to the different layout design on each model and VGA card, we strongly suggest to check our VGA support list for each model or test before purchasing the VGA card.

Note: For P series that equipped with fan duct, please remove fan duct to use with long length VGA card. Complete burn-in tests had been done without fan duct and thermal performance will not be compromised without fan duct.

Does my Shuttle PC support the latest NVIDIA GeForce or an ATI Radeon graphics card? Is the power supply too weak to support such a card?

The power supply unit can be counted on to deliver sufficient power without any difficulties. You need only consider whether the video card will fit in the system. Cards with a dual fan system (dual slot cards, or cards with an exceptionally large fan) may not fit in the Mini PC. The only exception are P/P2/H7/J1/J2/J3-series cases. My XPC no longer boots up or there is no picture displayed on the monitor. Is the motherboard defective?


The problem does not lie with the motherboard in 90% of such cases. Please follow these steps to isolate the problem:

  1. Please remove all non essential components (hard drives, disk drives, card reader, etc...) The CPU and memory, along with the video card if required, can be left in place at this stage.
  2. Please erase the CMOS by following this procedure:
    - Remove the electrical cord
    - Remove the CMOS battery
    - Press the CMOS button / Place the jumper in the reset position (10-20 seconds)
    - Reinstall the battery, electrical cord and try again. 
  3. Inspect the motherboard as much as possible for signs of damage. 
  4. Test the CPU in another system or another CPU in the current XPC. 
  5. Test the memory in another system, or different memory in the current XPC. We recommend the use of brand name memory for testing purposes. 
  6. Test the video card in a new system or another video card in the current XPC.

How to make a bootable USB flash drive?

Warning: Please be sure, that there are during formatting no other USB devices connected to your system like: external harddiscs, external optical devices or other USB flash drives This secures that you only format the selected USB flash drive.

The "BootFlashDos" tool is available here or at www.gocoding.com.

  1. Please run BootFlashDos.exe (for Windows XP)
    Please run BootFlashDos.exe by selecting it with the right mouse button and select run as administrator (for Windows Vista)
  2. Select your USB flash drive, if necessary click Refresh to update the device list.
  3. Select Quick Format.
  4. Press Start and confirm the following Warning popup.

How to copy files to the created bootable USB flash drive?

  1. Open your Windows Explorer and select your USB flash drive.
  2. Copy AWDFLASH.EXE and the latest BIOS Version to to your USB flash drive.


How to boot from USB flash drive?

  1. Insert your USB flash drive to your USB Ports.
  2. During boot press ESC (or F11 or F7) to enter the boot menu.
  3. Select USB-HDD or USB-ZIP (Depending on the model of the USB flash drive, it varied). On our newest Barebones youll find your USB flash drive, if recordnized, next to your harddiscs.
  4. Press Return to boot from your USB flash drive.

How to flash latest BIOS to my Barebone?

  1. After booting your USB flash drive youll be in the A:> or C:> prompt
  2. Execute awdflash.exe latest bios version.bin /cc/cd/cp/sn/py/nbl/wb/r (Please replace latest_bios_version.bin with your latest BIOS).
  3. AWDFlash will automaticaly start the flash progess. It will reboot after complete flash automaticaly, too.
